CERN ATLAS Toroid Magnet

Swiss specialist transport firm Friderici Special were commissioned to manoeuvre a 300 tonne, 13m high load at the CERN site in Geneva.

ALTAS is one of two general purpose detectors at the Large Hadron Collider. It investigates a wide range of physics, from the search of the Higgs boson to extra dimensions and particles that could make up dark matter.

The ATLAS Toroid Magnet is just one of over 40 modules which Friderici Special manoeuvred around the CERN facility to ATLAS Point 1 for installation.  Utilising a specialist trailer and two ballast tractors in push pull formation, Friderici were required to observe a maximum speed of less than 1 Km/h and a maximum force of 0.5g throughout the project.  Continually compensating the gradient and slope of 5° required in order to keep the 13m high cargo in a vertical position the delicate load safely navigated the site and was delivered to its destination for installation.

Now fully constructed and operational, the 46m long, 25m wide and 25m high ATLAS is the largest volume detector ever constructed for particle physics.  Among the questions ATLAS will focus on are why particles have mass, what the unknown 96% of the universe is made of and why nature prefers matter to antimatter.
